AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has donated GH₵732,309.40 to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) – Obuasi Campus to support its infrastructural development.
The donation is part of AngloGold Ashanti’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), reflecting the company’s commitment to improving quality education, which aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4.
The cheque was formally presented at the KNUST Obuasi Campus by Mr. Meshack Baah, Human Resources Director of AngloGold Ashanti, on behalf of Managing Director Ing. Samuel Boakye Pobee. Receiving the donation on behalf of Vice Chancellor Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson was the Coordinating Dean, Prof. Lawrence Darkwah, with senior management from both institutions in attendance.
Since its establishment in 2019 through a strategic partnership between AngloGold Ashanti, the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, and KNUST, the Obuasi campus has grown to accommodate nearly 3,000 students. With numbers projected to rise to nearly 10,000 in the next decade, infrastructure development has become urgent.
The funds will support the rehabilitation of the Hanger Auditorium, now a multifunctional lecture and event space, and help establish an E-learning Centre, a crucial step in bridging physical and digital learning environments.
The proposal for the funding was developed by Mr. David Twumasi-Ankrah (Senior Assistant Registrar) and Mr. Abdulai Suglo (Campus Finance Officer) with support from the Coordinating Dean, Prof. Lawrence Darkwah, and the Coordinating Registrar, Mr. Paul Adade Pinaman. The proposal outlines priority areas that AngloGold Ashanti has agreed to support annually.
"This support is coming in handy for us in the expansion and renovation of one of the classroom spaces given to us by AGA. It now serves dual purposes, as both a lecture hall and an auditorium,” remarked Prof. Lawrence Darkwah. “Part of the donation will also help us develop a seed-stage e-learning centre. It’s a small beginning, but an important one, inspired by the Kumasi campus model. This is how transformation begins.”
“We are immensely grateful,” the Dean added. “But like Oliver Twist, we ask for more, not out of greed, but necessity. Our students deserve world-class facilities right here, and we believe, with partners like AngloGold Ashanti, that dream is within reach.”
